![]() ![]() I didn't find this story as engaging as The Wreckers. There may be a thing or two that ties over from a previous work, but nothing that affects the ease of reading the story or would cause confusion. Actually, every book in the series stands alone. Regardless, the story moves along fine without getting caught up in the terms, especially since this story largely takes place on land.Įven though this is book 2 in the High Seas Trilogy, it can absolutely stand alone. Either you love nautical books and will be able to follow with no issue, or you can accept that they are talking about different parts of the ship - either you'll care and look them up, or you won't and you'll keep reading. Yes, there are nautical terms, but this doesn't detract from the story. The writing is easy to read, being appropriate for its intended audience, and while this isn't a story or series to get super wrapped up in, it's still an engaging, nice story. Some things I expected, but others were a surprise. ![]() You sympathize with John's lack of trust and hesitate with him in making decisions. How's that for a review in one sentence? -)īut seriously, Iain does a great job of keeping you guessing about what's REALLY going on with the wreckers. ![]()

Exactly what reading costs, reckoned in terms of pence per hour, is difficult to estimate, but I have made a start by inventorying my own books and adding up their total price. This idea that the buying, or even the reading, of books is an expensive hobby and beyond the reach of the average person is so widespread that it deserves some detailed examination. They fell to talking about his newspaper, which most of them read and approved of, but when he asked them what they thought of the literary section, the answer he got was: “You don't suppose we read that stuff, do you? Why, half the time you're talking about books that cost twelve and sixpence! Chaps like us couldn't spend twelve and sixpence on a book.” These, he said, were men who thought nothing of spending several pounds on a day trip to Blackpool. A couple of years ago a friend of mine, a newspaper editor, was firewatching with some factory workers. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When I sat down to write this, I knew exactly where my copy was on my bookshelf. I have probably re-read Blaze Wyndham over 100 times, easily. That book followed me from home to college, and then to Spain when I studied abroad and only brought three books in my luggage. Blaze was a dramatic and sexually saturated romp through Tudor history. I read Catherine Coulter’s historicals first, but when I found Blaze Wyndham ( A | K | G | AB | WorldCat ), well, my mind was indeed blown. Small was one of those authors whose books were a part of my foundation in romance. She was fearless and gracious, smart and tenacious. I am genuinely sad to hear that she’s died, though I know she was in poor health. Many writers, especially in erotic romance, talk about pushing the envelope, redrawing the boundaries, exploring new limits – Small did all of that, and she did it over thirty years ago. Bertrice Small, one of the original “Avon Ladies,” and the author of more than 50 romances, including many that hold the honored position of “the first romance I ever read” for many readers, died yesterday at the age of 77.īertrice Small was not the first romance author I read, but I think many readers have a book of Small’s that they discovered and still remember - because if you hadn’t read books like hers before, your mind was BLOWN. ![]() ![]() (Why do such a thing? Setting aside laziness or chronic over-commitment-academic summers are pretty full and it’s not easy to get to everything you mean to read-the main reason is to mimic students’ experience: it’s never a bad idea to remember what it’s like at the other side of the seminar table. It’s possible to know quite a bit about books we haven’t read-maybe we’ve glanced at them, paged through them, read snippets and summaries of.
